Dan Gillmor
Dan Gillmor is a technology writer, columnist, and Brisbane resident. He’s the director of the Knight Center for Digital Media Entrepreneurship at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Also, he’s a fellow at the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University.
Gillmor is also the author of a popular blog about technology news and even a staunch advocate for internet freedom and privacy, and against rigid enforcement of copyright laws.
Most of Dan’s interests in his life are media: newspapers, music, Internet, books, and education.
He wrote two important books. We the Media: Grassroots Journalism By the People For the People, was released in 2004. This essential work analyzes the new role of journalism in the era of the Internet and was positively reviewed by newspapers such as The Financial Times and The Guardian. The second of Dan’s two published books to date is “Mediactive.” According to the author, the goal of the book is “to help turn passive media consumers into active users — as participants at every step of the process starting with what we read.”
He’s currently working on a new book that is also a web project. The title is, tentatively, Permission Taken. In it, Dan reflects about “the increasing control that companies and governments are exerting over the way we use technology and communicate.” He will also dedicate some chapters to suggestions on how to gain back “some of that control.”
